Tonnes of rock have fallen from a cliff near a beach on the Greek Island of Zante, capsizing boats and putting hundreds of nearby tourists in danger.

Coast guard officials told the Evening Standard that those hurt had not sustained any life-threatening injuries.

The 21-year-old, who works for a tour company on the island, said: "The rock that fell, oh gosh, it would be like a four storey building falling onto the beach".

The video included below shows the moment the rock broke away from the cliff face, with what was described as some as being an "almighty cracking sound".

The other three people injured were treated and released.

"There was a rumble and a rock fell, followed by a larger rock and then another".

He said: "I thought more was coming and I just started running".

The water hit his feet with such a strong force, it knocked him onto his back and went on to cover more than half the beach.

Small boats are capsized after a landslide occurred at the popular beach of Navagio, or Shipwreck Beach, on the western island of Zakynthos, Greece, Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018. However, authorities conducted searches out of an abundance of caution.

"So far, we haven't found any trapped people but we will continue searching", a fire brigade official said.

Imagine the worst beach trip you possibly can.

Authorities evacuated and shut down access to the beach, which can only by reached by boat, as a precaution.

The beach is also known as Shipwreck Beach.
