Russian Federation to boost Syrian air defence with S-300 system

Monday's incident highlighted the dangers posed by the conflicting interests of various powers in the crowded skies over war-torn Syria and threatened to damage relations between Russian Federation and Israel. "It has a much more capable acquisition and fire control radar, together with a package of missiles that offer much greater probability kill against high maneuverability targets and some missile defense capability". The crash was one of the deadliest incidents for regular Russian service members in the Syrian war.

"The situation has changed, and not due to our fault", the statement said.

The spokesman pointed that the Israeli F-16 fighter jet's pilot knew that Russia's Ilyushin Il-20 aircraft would be a preferred target for Syrian air defenses.

However, U.S. -Russian relations remain at their lowest point in decades, in part over differences in Syria, Ukraine and U.S. allegations Russia meddled in the 2016 U.S. election.

Following the recent downing of a Russian aircraft over Syria, speculation has swirled that an increasingly close and publicly warm relationship between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in jeopardy.

The Defense Ministry released detailed computer simulations over the weekend that it said showed that Israeli planes used the Russian reconnaissance aircraft as cover. But the Russian military came out on Sunday, renewing the accusations against Israel. "Everything had worked right up until the tragedy that occurred recently".

The troops are supposedly helping to set up alternative government structures in reclaimed ISIS territories - but their presence is viewed as illegal by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Israel has carried out some 200 airstrikes over the last 18 months, claiming that the attacks aimed to prevent Iranian weapon convoys and stop Iran from establishing a military foothold in Syria.

Israeli fighter jets conducted the September 17 airstrike on a weapons facility in the coastal city of Latakia that the IDF said was going to provide weapons to the Hezbollah terror group and other Iranian proxies.

This incident "has pushed us to adopt adequate response measures directed at boosting the security of Russian troops", Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu explained.

"The Russians are careful guys and have their arrangement with the Israelis", he said. It said that the Israeli Air Force gave the Russian side less than a minute's warning before their air raid, leaving virtually no time for any safety maneuvers.

White House National Security Adviser John Bolton said Monday that he hopes Russian Federation will reconsider supplying missiles to Syria, noting that it is a would be a "major mistake" and "significant escalation".

In the phone call, Netanyahu also said he told Putin that Israel would continue to protect its security and interests.

The S-300 is more efficient and advanced than any other interceptor missile system now in Syrian possession. "This high-precision campaign it has been carrying out will become more hard". "Israel is aware of that", Farhat said. "It won't make them invulnerable to Israeli attacks, but it will make things more complicated and raise the risk of losses".
