Second-round tee times for the Tour Championship

Second-round tee times for the Tour Championship

As if the hype was not being built enthusiastically enough for next week's Ryder Cup, to see Tiger Woods eagling his way into the lead here on Thursday only served to ramp up the anticipation yet further.

But the in-form Englishman rolled in a 20-foot putt for birdie on the penultimate green, and a delightful up-and-down from a greenside bunker at the par-five last set up a closing birdie and lifted him to within a shot of leaders Tiger Woods and Rickie Fowler.

As so often in his great years, Woods put in a grandstand finish at the par five 18th, sliding home a 28ft eagle putt to send the crowd into rapture.

"The only thing I struggled with today, I feel like the ball sits up so much in these fairways, and with my wedge play, the ball was going a long way out there, and that's just what I didn't quite trust with a few wedge shots today".

Utah's event moving to June dates for first time ever

"To be able to have played this well after coming off of what I came off of". "I hit it well off the tee, which gave me a lot of kind of short irons into the greens and opportunities. But I just thought we have a house over here, my wife's American, my goal is to try to get on the PGA Tour, so it was a flawless opportunity to try and do it".

What a story it would be if his first win for five years, and the 80th on the PGA Tour in his incredible career, happened at this event, so close to the biennial dust-up in Versailles. Then I added Tampa in there because I missed the cut in LA. They both need high finishes to jump into the top 25 on the Tour Championship money list.

FedEx Cup leading Bryson DeChambeau had an East Lake debut he would rather forget in posting two double-bogeys over his opening nine on route to a round of 71.
