Sheriff: Border Patrol agent suspected of killing 4 women, 5th woman escapes

Ortiz was arrested in the parking lot of a hotel where he was attempting to hide, Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar said at a press conference. Authorities say one woman Ortiz had abducted escaped early Saturday morning and she was able to alert authorities.

One of the victims was a transgender woman, said Webb County District Attorney Isidro Alaniz.

Mr Alaniz said investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the killings, and that they believe Ortiz acted alone.

The Texas Rangers in collaboration with the Webb County Sheriff's Office are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in the same vicinity where the body of another victim was found a week ago. Alaniz also said the male victim was believed to be a prostitute.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson confirmed Ortiz is a supervisory Border Patrol agent.

A US Border Patrol agent in Texas described by authorities as a "serial killer" has been arrested for the murders four prostitutes and the abduction of a fifth, who managed to escape him and notify authorities. Establishing and maintaining high standards for Border Patrol agents is a top priority for my office.

Just this afternoon I spoke with CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan to talk about the situation in Laredo. That information belongs to the corresponding agencies who are handling the information and will make a more in depth release at the appropriate time.

The sheriff added that the suspect, who has worked for Border Patrol for a decade, would be charged later on Saturday. Numerous workers are also low-income women of color. We will continue to monitor this situation to see how we can provide any additional resources to DHS.

His statement added: "Our sincerest condolences go out to the victims' family and friends".
