Storm sweep Mystics, win third WNBA title

With wins Friday night (89-76) and Sunday afternoon, the Storm remained unbeaten in home games in the WNBA Finals.

"This is all about Sue", says Breanna Stewart. They had their work cut out for them Wednesday despite playing at EagleBank Arena, their home court in Fairfax, Virginia, after falling behind 2-0 in the series' first two games in Seattle. "She's kind of helped me get to this point, and like you said, if there was one person on this team that I wanted to win it with it was her". "Obviously we show that when we watch film, we get better. We have to continue to play with energy and stay motivated". From there, it was smooth sailing to the 16-point win. That followed a 3-for-21 performance in Game 1.

"I gotta say, as exciting as it is to have the Storm making playoff noise - I'm anxious that everyone's not on the same page".

She concluded, "Going into game three we are trying to execute".

When they're hot, they're hot.

Converting their 3-point attempts would be a big step in the right direction. "We're one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the league". That is something that Seattle's Sue Bird and Washington's Kristi Toliver did together years ago that served as the start of a strong friendship that has grown over the past six years. "You can't go away from their strengths". League MVP Breanna Stewart scored 30 points in the victory and was selected Finals MVP after averaging 25.6 points through the three games.

"They're the defending champs now, they're young, they're really talented, they're smart, and they know how to play with each other", Washington coach Mike Thybault said.

"She has really long arms, so when she catches it in the paint, it's hard to contend". The decision to speak publicly about a very private part of her life, along with the outpouring of support afterwards, have given her a sense of freedom, she said. Having coached her in USA Basketball, I have so much admiration for her. Howard finished the first half with 17 points and eight rebounds, shooting 5-of-6 from the field. Yes, she's not at 100 percent playing with a bone bruise in her left knee, but the absence of Delle Donne in the fourth quarter was a major factor in Game 2. I was able to get to the free-throw line.

-Made Shots: For a team who relies too heavily on the three-ball, the Mystics have to convert and knock down shots.

"There's been a huge transformation with the culture of this team", said Delle Donne, who was acquired by Washington before the 2017 season. In Game 5 of the semifinals she had 28 points. It's not like we haven't seen her do this before. "The more aggressive you are, the more likely you are to get a call", Toliver said. That ties them with the Detroit Shock and the Los Angeles Sparks for the third most, behind the Houston Comets and the Minnesota Lynx - who have won four times each.

If any team is ready to fight with their backs against the wall, it's these Mystics.

"I know I didn't want her career to end without getting back here".

Seattle swept the best-of-five series, 3-0.
