TD Bank closes 16 branches in the Carolinas as Florence approaches

Trump has urged those in the path of Hurricane Florence to act now to 'get out of its way'.

The hurricane was about 470 miles (755 km) east-southeast of Myrtle beach SC, with maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour (205 km/h), the Miami, Florida-based weather forecaster said. The forecast shows landfall occurring early on September 15, 2018 after an update indicated weather conditions would slow down the storm; the update was issued on September 12, 2018.

Up to 1.7 million people in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia have been given voluntary or mandatory evacuation orders, according to emergency management officials, as the storm churned across the Atlantic Ocean toward the coast.

"We'll handle it. We're ready, we're able, we've got the finest people I think anywhere in the world".

"Protection of life is the absolute highest priority", he added.

Florence will be the strongest storm to make landfall on the East Coast in 20 years-the last storm on its level was Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

The National Hurricane Center Tuesday afternoon increased its rainfall forecast to 15-25 inches of rain with 35 inches in isolated spots.

But despite the potentially devastating hurricane, forecast to make landfall on Friday with 130mph winds, people tried to offer some "relief" in the silence before the storm.

Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) is now in a Level 2 enhanced monitoring operation, officials told 11Alive.

The "cone of error" in the forecast track only predicts where the storm's center might go, and even on its edges, winds can push a powerful storm surge into shore dozens of miles from where Florence's eyewall strikes land. Georgia is expected to see tropical storm-force winds and rain in some spots.

The overall trend is "exceptionally bad news", said University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy, since it "smears a landfall out over hundreds of miles of coastline, most notably the storm surge". You're going to be displaced from your home in the coastal areas.

President Trump is receiving regular updates on the situation.

Gov. Roy Cooper is reminding North Carolinians that Hurricane Florence is a storm that shouldn't be taken lightly.

The eastbound lanes of several major highways have been shut down to allow traffic to flow inland, but the exodus was slow along roads jammed with outward-bound vehicles.

In Wilmington, Solange Iliou Thompson closed down her restaurant, Indochine, because all of her employees had left the city.
