The longest week: Carolinas worn out by Florence

Whether Trump was joking or simply pointing out a bit of silver lining, the interaction prompted some to question the president's empathy for the many Carolinians whose homes and possessions were destroyed in Florence - the latest in a string of his responses to natural disasters to be criticized. That includes those of two women who drowned when a sheriff's van taking them to a mental health facility was swept off a road.

The deputies were transporting the women from Conway, near the coast, to Darlington, about 65 miles northwest, on Tuesday night.

"And we have not only the record amounts that have dropped on SC, particularly in this third of the state, but we have the water coming down from North Carolina, because we have three watersheds, three river sheds: the Waccamaw, the Pee Dee, and the Lynches River".

He said he was confident the state would "build our way out" of what he called possibly the "worst disaster" to hit in its history, with the cooperation of "Team South Carolina" and Trump. Environmentalists warn that from-for problems with a high water also resulted in a serious leak of sewage.

The Horry County Sheriff's Department said in a statement that when the waters overtook the van, they rose too quickly for the pair to be saved.

More than 15,000 people remain in shelters and more than 200,000 customers are without power across North Carolina because of Florence, which made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on Friday morning, according to state officials.

Duke Energy Corp started to return its Brunswick nuclear power plant in North Carolina to service on Thursday.


The flooding has killed an estimated 3.4 million chickens and 5,500 hogs, authorities said.

Agriculture is the biggest industry in North Carolina. The state ranks No. 1 in poultry and egg cash receipts, and second in swine. It is also the top producer of tobacco, but estimates for crop losses aren't yet available. On Wednesday, she took us there.
