Toyota unveils new Yaris GR Sport and Y20 models

Toyota's ripping little Yaris GRMN hot hatch, that we unfortunately miss out on in Australia, has been given a slightly tamed down brother in the form of the new Yaris GRMN Sport.

Toyota is set to launch two new versions of its Yaris supermini at the 2018 Paris Motor Show next month, and the Japanese auto giant has released images and details of both the GR Sport and the limited edition Y20 ahead of the event. GR Sport is not as powerful as GRMN, but fuse it is much more than the standard girly hatchback. The upgraded parts include Sachs Performance shocks and a solid, more rigid anti-roll bar that replaces the standard hollow piece. The ride height, meanwhile, has been dropped by some 11 mm compared with that of the standard Yaris, while the gap between wheel and body has been cut by 18 mm.

The black 17-inch cast alloy wheels are exclusive to the GR Sport, but are fitted with the same Bridgestone Potenza RE50 205/45R17 tyres as the GRMN model.

In addition, Toyota also announced the new Yaris Y20, a new special grade created to celebrate the 20 anniversary of the best-selling city auto.

The exterior has been updated with a black roof, a rear spoiler, piano-black door moldings, a black honeycomb grille with matching door mirror housings and front fog lamp surrounds. Red decals can be added to the front lip and the top line of the lower rear bumper to generate extra sporty visual appeal. The GR Sport trim - as well as only being available as a five-door - can only be specced with a 1.5-litre hybrid powertrain, which develops all of 99bhp.

Passengers are also treated to a range of enhancements, including Gazoo Racing sports seats wrapped in black Ultrasuede, held together with white contrast stitching and white inserts. When the driver presses the start button, the multi-information TFT display comes to life with the GR logo, setting the tone for a rewarding drive in store.

The cabin furthermore features black headlining plus a satin chrome trim for the gearshift lever, air vent surrounds and speaker surrounds. As a finishing touch, black GR-branded carpet mats with silver edging are fitted.
