Trump to visit North Carolina as governor urges residents to be patient

President Trump said nearly 20,000 military personnel and federal workers were deployed to help with the aftermath of the storm, The Associated Press reported. "There will be nothing left undone", he said.

During a briefing at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, Trump asked Lynn Good, chairman and CEO of Duke Energy, how things were near Lake Norman.

Almost 3 feet of rain fell in some parts of North Carolina and almost 2 feet in areas of SC.

"I know for many people this feels like a nightmare that just won't end", he said.

Authorities say two female inmates being transported to a mental health facility in SC drowned in rising flood waters after the van they were in was swept away.

President Donald Trump made a stop in Conway on Wednesday as part of his tour of the Carolinas to see damage that was caused by Hurricane Florence. The president made similar comments a year ago while addressing victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, a storm over which Trump continues to face criticism in terms of his response.

The town's water treatment system overflowed with rain from Hurricane Florence, discharging sewage into Driving Branch in the Neuse River Basin.

Trump promised North and SC would have strong federal support. "You take care of yourself", he said.

Hurricane Florence made landfall on Friday, but it's 90 miles per hour winds and 20-plus inches of rain have left damage and flooding throughout portions of eastern and central North Carolina.

Access improved to Wilmington, a North Carolina port city of 120,000 that was cut off for days by high water.

"All my stuff is gone", she said.

More than 15,000 people remain in shelters and more than 200,000 customers are without power across North Carolina because of Florence, which came ashore as a category 1 hurricane, according to state officials. An estimated 3.4 million chickens and 5,500 hogs died in the flooding, according to preliminary estimates from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The river hit 61.4 feet early Wednesday morning.

WILMINGTON, N.C. The death toll from Hurricane Florence climbed to at least 37, including two mental health patients who drowned when a sheriff's van was swept away by floodwaters, and North Carolina's governor pleaded with thousands of evacuees not to return home just yet.

Although the storm is long gone, river flooding still poses a danger to the area.

Supplies have been brought into the city by big military trucks and helicopters, which also were used to pluck hundreds of desperate people from homes and other structures.

President Trump has arrived in flood-soaked North Carolina, where under sunny skies, he's getting a firsthand look at the devastation that has killed dozens of people and displaced many thousands from their homes across the Southeast.

"Hurricane Florence was one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the Carolinas".

Richardson says the incident happened near the Little Pee Dee River, which is one of the bodies of water officials are monitoring for intense flooding following Florence.

Sixteen North Carolina rivers were at major flood stage Tuesday, with an additional three forecasted to peak by Thursday.
