Amazon makes Kindle Paperwhite waterproof-and it still starts at $129

"Customers love the Kindle Paperwhite, and we're excited to bring premium features-like a thinner and lighter flush-front design, additional storage, waterproofing, and Audible-to our most popular Kindle", said Eric Saarnio, Head of Amazon Devices, Europe. Called simply the All-new Kindle Paperwhite on Amazon's site, the new model features a big redesign with a better screen, a thinner body, and more.

The waterproofing means users can read on the beach, in the tub, and around water in general and not worry about the safety of their Kindle.

Improved display: The six-inch, high resolution 300 ppi display created to reproduce crisp, laser-quality text that reads like real paper includes five LEDs and an adjustable front light for a uniform, glare-free display created to work under all conditions, including even direct sunlight.

Twice the storage : The base storage now starts at 8 GB, twice what the previous generation Paperwhite offered. Or choose 32 GB to hold more magazines, comics, and audiobooks.

The new Paperwhite also now has Bluetooth for connecting wireless headphones or speakers, and built-in Audible support for Amazon's audiobook store, including the company's syncing service that matches pages in an ebook to time points in an audiobook. You know, in case you like reading on something that has a battery that lasts longer than Luke Skywalker's Jedi training.

Amazon also announced some software changes that will be available on the new Paperwhite.

Get instant access to new releases and bestsellers, plus over a million titles at $2.99 or less.

Speaking of taking stuff with you wherever, whenever, the all-new Kindle Paperwhite doubles down on its forerunner's internal storage, letting you hoard thousands and thousands of digital books with 8 gigs of space in an entry-level configuration. There's also a Dark Mode, and a new Home Screen that has a new "fun facts" section and even more room for recommendations.

Waterproof: The all-new Kindle Paperwhite IPX8 rated to protect against immersion in up to two meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes.

With the mid-range Kindle Voyage out of the picture for a couple of months now, it's certainly not surprising to see an "all-new" Kindle Paperwhite released at a $130 starting price. Amazon also offers a $159, 32GB model and a $249, 32GB model with included cellular connectivity.
