At least 17 dead, dozens injured after train derails in Taiwan

Taiwanese authorities have confirmed that at least 17 people have been killed and more than 120 others injured after a high-speed train derailed in the north east of the country.

Carriages are scattered at the site of a train derailment in Lian in northern Taiwan on Sunday.

The Puyuma express train was carrying more than 300 passengers to Taitung city when it derailed at 4:50 the rural township of Tungshan, the transportation ministry's railway administration said in a statement.

Taiwan's central government said that the premier had been notified about the situation, Reuters report.

Images from the scene, just south of the city of Luodong, showed the train's eight cars in a zig-zag formation near the tracks.

At least six compartments of the train overturned, said Taiwan Railways Administration, according to Apple Daily.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the derailment. Photographs captured by Central News Agency depict the wreckage. Yilan County Fire Department have been dispatched to the scene and instructed to continue searching for more people killed or potentially still trapped in the wreckage.

Around 200 passengers were on board when the incident happened, and two people were taken to the hospital.
