Cuomo Blames Republicans For "Proud Boys" Brawl

Cuomo Blames Republicans For

The New York Police Department announced three arrests were made in the wake of a violent brawl Friday night after a speech by Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes, a controversial figure on the alt-right, at the city's Republican Club.

Following the speech at the club, a longtime gathering place for Republicans, more than a dozen members of the Proud Boys reportedly roamed the streets and clashed with counter-protesters. "Hate can not and will not be tolerated in NY".

"The NYPD is fully investigating last night's attack involving the Proud Boys", de Blasio tweeted Saturday.

Russo is facing robbery and assault charges. Portland police reported seeing hard-knuckle gloves, knives, batons and firearms. Video shows the two groups coming face-to-face before the first punches were thrown.

Gibson had organized a "flash march for Law and Order" toward downtown, where Black Lives Matter activists and others had set up a memorial for police shooting victim Patrick Kimmons.

This answer is unlikely to satisfy anyone ― either the participants in what amount to gang battles, or the observers who have come to view downtown Portland as a war zone.

A spokeswoman for the state Republican Party called Cuomo's comments "outrageous".

"I am disturbed and disgusted by the videos I've seen of members of the neo-fascist, white supremacist Proud Boys group engaging in hate-fueled mob violence on the streets of New York City", said Public Advocate Letitia James, a Democrat who is running for state attorney general.

"I'm asking the state police to assist, and I'm asking the Federal Bureau of Investigation to assist", Cuomo told reporters.

The governor called the invitation to McInnes to speak at the Metropolitan Republican Club a "political tactic because what they're trying to do is fire up their base" ahead of the midterm elections.

The Upper East Side Republican Club where McInnes spoke was vandalized before Friday's event.
