New 'Halloween' Has A Record Breaking Opening Weekend

As already mentioned, Halloween's $77.5 million three-day debut was the second largest October opening weekend of all-time, coming less than $3 million shy of the record set by Venom earlier this month.

With 10 days to go until the holiday, including another weekend, the studio expects "Halloween" to enjoy a much longer life than typical horror films that usually drop off significantly after the first weekend.

In some ways, the new Halloween film is - like its predecessor - blissfully simple, the story of a determined woman (Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode) taking on an unstoppable killing machine in the form of Michael Myers (Nick Castle and James Jude Courtney). The horror film headlined a massive weekend overall weekend, that saw the top twelve combine for over $160 million, making this the second largest October weekend ever. The reboot/sequel (reborquel) to John Carpenter's 1978 original brought back Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode; had the original movie's director, John Carpenter, as executive producer; and brought in the talented David Gordon Green to handle directing duties while working from a script by Danny McBride. It fell just short of Tom Hardy's superhero film Venom, which had a $80.2 million opening a few weeks ago. Halloween also had the tenth best opening for an R-rated movie of any genre. In fact, until this weekend, Jamie Lee Curtis' biggest opening weekend was $29 million for Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

The film is likely doing so well due to its October release date and the return of Curtis to the franchise.

Reviews have been largely positive for the new installment, with an 80 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ Cinema Score from audiences that were mostly older (59 percent over 25) and male (53 percent).

Halloween's gross should only continue to climb thanks to this upcoming weekend right before Halloween.
