Ranked Halep withdraws from WTA Finals

After withdrawing from the ongoing Kremlin Cup, Romanian tennis star Simona Halep has now pulled out of the upcoming WTA Finals due to a back injury.

She withdrew from the US$7 million (S$9.65 million) season-ender owing to a lower back injury.

"Unfortunately, after much discussion with my team and doctors, I have made the decision to withdraw from the WTA Finals in Singapore". "Obviously, winning here past year was very special and I am looking forward to giving it another try, and I am excited for the challenge". Her last match was at Beijing where she retired to Ons Jabeur.

The 26-year-old, who reached the doubles final in Singapore 12 months ago with Swede Johanna Larsson, said: "I'm very happy with my season and to finish it off at the WTA Finals is the ultimate prize".

Halep broke her grand slam duck in 2018, winning her first major title at the French Open in June, after twice finishing runner-up at Roland Garros and once at the Australian Open.


Halep clinched the year-end top ranking on Monday after enjoying her best year on tour in 2018.

After Serena Williams' absence, as the top qualifier in 2015 and then the No. 2 in 2016, this is the third time a player in the top two has withdrawn from the Singapore event.

Sixth racket of the world, Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina for the second year in a row will be at the Final tournament the Women's tennis Association (WTA).

"We hope for the sake of the regions youngsters that this platform to meet each other and watch the world's best female players continues to be part of this great year-ender, " he added.

The other singles players who will be doing battle for a US$7-million (S$9.6m) prize purse here are Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki, US Open victor Naomi Osaka, Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitova, Sloane Stephens, Karolina Pliskova and Elina Svitolina.
