He said the call said buses are being staged at Lowe's Food across from the schools.

However Commissioner George Brown told WECT there is a malfunctioning piece of equipment at the school that sounds like gunfire when it makes a noise.

A report of an active shooter at Topsail High School sparked law enforcement response Friday morning.

Reports of an active shooter at Topsail High School are said to be due to faulty mechanical equipment.

Pender County Emergency Director Tom Collins said he believes a broken water heater caused the noise.


Pender County schools posted on Twitter that all campuses on the eastern side of the county are on lockdown.

James Rowell with the Pender County Sheriff's Office confirmed there were no reports of injuries Friday.

Two Topsail High School students were arrested in May after allegedly bringing weapons onto campus, including one student who went to school armed with a semi-automatic rifle.

WECT TV reported that a local commission said no active shooter has been identified.

The county school system notified parents of a reported active shooter in a tweet. According to its website, school begins at 8:30 a.m.
