Cashman: Yankees Want To Bring Back Sabathia, Happ

The New York Yankees have signed CC Sabathia to a one-year deal, as the veteran left-hander will return for his 19th - and final - season, he said Wednesday. I definitely can still get guys out.

The Yankees' projected rotation for 2019 also includes right-handers Luis Severino and Masahiro Tanaka, and Cashman says he intends to add several pitchers after the team went 100-62 only to finish second in the AL East and lose in the Division Series to Boston, the eventual World Series champion. "I'll play for whoever needs me". "I think he'd like to stay and we'd like to keep him but it's a free market and that complicates things at times".

In 29 starts last season, Sabathia threw 153 innings of 3.65 ERA baseball.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has often implied that the team will continue its bargaining in the upcoming season, and his recent comments all but solidify that idea.

"The game's evolved to the point where people can see what the real numbers are behind the numbers and the recognition that whoever winds up acquiring Sonny Gray is going to acquire someone that's going to be the player, the pitcher he was more with Oakland", Cashman said. "Obviously you'd love to bring CC back if we can and then add multiples past that". Both are reported to be on the block as the Indians look to shed salary.

Sabathia has played the last 10 of his 18 Major League seasons for the Yankees.

Said Cashman: "He's been a great Yankee and he has some time on the clock still". He had surgery on his right knee after the 2010 season, in July 2014, after the 2016 season and again last month.

At least one more year.
