Cavs and Larry Drew agree to new head coaching contract

Cavs and Larry Drew agree to new head coaching contract

Drew and his agent, Andy Miller, were able to get a deal for the 2019-20 season that can be terminated for a buyout figure if the Cavaliers decide to conduct a search and hire a new coach, league sources said.

After picking up a much needed win on the road the previous night in San Antonio, Orlando was looking to keep it up at the Amway Center Monday evening when they faced the struggling Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Cavs and Korver reportedly had a handshake deal that the team would trade him if LeBron James opted out of his contract.

The 60-year-old Drew, who took over when Cleveland started 0-6 under Lue this season, spent his first two years with the Cavs as an assistant coach.

Because of the team's lack of overall success over the years, Nikola Vucevic has flown under the radar as one of the most effective big men in the Conference.

Drew has coached the Cavs to a 10-3 record, dating back to last season.

"Now there's clarity. There's no gray area".

"I embrace the challenge".

The Cavs have gone 1-2 under Drew, who didn't want to proceed this season without assurances from the organization.

Cleveland isn't Drew's first head coaching job.

After an Aaron Gordon jumper cut the lead to three with just under 24 seconds to play (meaning Orlando had to foul), a Cedi Osman pass got stolen by D.J. Augustin, who got fouled and made both free throws to cut the Cleveland lead to one with 18.7 seconds to play.

Drew is pleased to have his situation resolved. "We didn't handle it and that is why we lost the game". "We've got to ask more of our players with Kevin being out, that's the reality, and we're prepared to do that".

Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman confirmed the appointment in a brief statement published on the Cavaliers website. "He brings important experience and many qualities that we expect to translate well with our team as the head coach", said Altman.
