Delhi’s air quality near ‘severe’, three most polluted cities from NCR

According to Central Pollution Control Board data, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Noida recorded an AQI of 416 on November 1, which falls under "severe category while the PM10 level in Delhi stood at 368".

Weathermen have advised caution for residents of Delhi as the city's Air Quality Index (AQI) continue to score below "severe" category after breaching the 400 mark. "Only then can we find a solution", tweeted Arvind Kejriwal.

Large scale studies have demonstrated that there is a correlation between poor air quality and lower IQ levels and that higher levels of nitrogen oxide-a particularly pernicious component of air pollution-can drive psychiatric disorders in children.

At the meeting, the Union Minister said that the steps taken by Punjab and Haryana to curb the menace of stubble burning were "far from satisfactory".

There was significant representation from non-state actors working in India, who made their own commitments "I bring you greetings from the most polluted city in the world", Arvind Kumar, head of the Centre for Chest Surgery and Lung Transplantation at Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, and founder of Lung Care Foundation, said.

The center-run System of Air Quality Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) attributed "heavy stubble burning in the last 24 hours and calm winds as the reason behind the further deterioration of air capital".

The World Health Organization has issued an update to its air quality reports, estimating that 1.8 billion children around the globe are breathing air pollution that exceeds recommended safety levels.

The apex court told the counsel appearing for the Delhi government that the NGT's order banning plying of 15-year-old petrol and 10-year-old diesel vehicles in the Delhi-NCR was passed on April 7, 2015 and an appeal against this order was dismissed by the top court on May 15, 2015.

Mr Harsh Vardhan also said that there should be no politics over pollution, as it was a serious issue.

In directions issued by the Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA), all stone crushers and hot mix plants generating dust pollution will also stop functioning in Delhi and other NCR districts from Thursday.

The building department has also fined owners of 39 sites for not complying with its directives to check pollution and a fine of Rs 8 lakh was imposed on them. "The moisture intrusion over Delhi and surrounding regions due to the westerlies disturbances will increase with effect from November 4 to enhanced holding capacity of atmosphere resulting in increase in PM2.5 levels", the SAFAR website said. "To get there, we need to set an aspirational goal to reduce the number of deaths from air pollution by two-thirds by 2030", said Ghebreyesus in his closing speech.

Satyendra Kumar, deputy secretary at the environment ministry, said during his presentation at the World Health Organization summit, "We are committed to bring PM10 and PM 2.5 levels down in definite percent terms by 2024".
