Democrat Gillum concedes in close Florida governor's race

DeSantis, who was a little-known congressman from the Jacksonville suburbs a year ago, squeaked past Democrat Andrew Gillum in what quickly became a nasty contest with racial overtones and accusations of corruption.

Some results of the US midterm elections have come in and quite a number of black people have won different seats. Widespread belief in Florida that he would win easily and Trump threw his support behind DeSantis, DeSantis won the primary.

Gillum accused DeSantis of using a racist term and said Trump followers "no longer do whistle calls".

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum and his wife R. Jai voted Tuesday morning at a church in the northside of the city.

"That race was swung by Donald Trump to DeSantis, who's now behind".

The Florida race in particular appeared to be coming down to the wire.

Gillum said he called Desantis and congratulated him, but told supporters that "in spite of our congratulating him on his victory this evening nothing that we believe in is compromised".

"I would like to thank the president for standing by me when it wasn't necessarily the smart thing to do", he said.

Democrats, playing catch-up after a net loss of 13 governorships and more than 900 state legislative seats during the eight-year Obama administration, fielded their largest slate of legislative candidates in more than three decades.

Republicans also scored a major victory in Ohio's governor race, where Mike DeWine, the state attorney general, defeated Democrat Richard Cordray, who served as the first director of the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He enjoyed support from President Trump throughout his campaign. Gravis gives Gillum a 1-point advantage, NBC News/Marist shows him up by 4, Quinnipiac by 7, HarrisX by 4, Emerson by 5, and St. Pete Polls by 5. For the son of a construction worker and a school bus driver, it's a classic tale of the American dream, and a new chapter in Gillum's ambitious political career (he became the youngest person elected to Tallahassee's City Commission when he was just 23-years-old). "Republicans had a very strong candidate Adam Putnam, who is in the primary against DeSantis..."

One tweet said: "Those that worked with me in this incredible Midterm Election, embracing certain policies and principles, did very well". He said health care is a priority for him because of a pre-existing medical condition.
