Djokovic drawn to face Zverev and Cilic in London — ATP Finals

He will be gunning for a great showing in London after missing out past year due to injury.

Djokovic, incidentally, is assured of his fifth number one record even before the ATP Finals begin as a result of Nadal's late withdrawal through injury.

"I have done everything possible to reach the end of the season in good condition, both in Paris and London, and I really wanted to play".

"Unfortunately, I had abdominal problem in Paris last week and also required an operation on an ankle injury". And two of those he was unable to finish. But he competed in only three events after the French Open in June.

After his success at Roland Garros and a run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon, Nadal did enjoy hard-court success, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of the Rogers Cup .

A few weeks later he beat Del Potro in the final to win the US Open and last month claimed the Shanghai Masters title without dropping a set.

Djokovic has also not been afraid to take chances and innovate his game, bringing in Boris Becker as part of his coaching team for the start of the 2014 season, although he has since reunited with long-time mentor Marian Vajda. It is worrying he only played 49 matches, only the second time since 2005 that he has played less then 50 times in a calendar year.

Nadal in 2018 at the level of the ATP tour he played 40 matches and scored 36 victories. His only problem is his body keeps letting him down.

Furthermore, Djokovic enjoys a lifetime 25-22 record over Federer and 27-25 against Nadal.

What Nadal must do in 2019 is protect his body more and that may mean playing a more selective schedule.

The Spaniard will be hoping to return to full fitness for the Australian Open - where he won the title in 2009 - in January.

Sadly, @RafaelNadal has had to end his season early through injury.

In a statement the 32-year-old said: "It has been a complicated year".

Only a semi-final defeat at the French Open prevented him from becoming just the third man to capture a calendar Grand Slam.
