Former Cowboy Dez Bryant agrees to deal with Saints

Not long after his release from Dallas, Bryant turned down a three-year contract offer from the Baltimore Ravens, according to several media outlets.

The Dez Bryant saga has finally reached its next chapter as the receiver-needy Saints have signed the former Dallas Cowboy to a one-year deal.

Even though his yardage numbers have dipped over the past three or four years, Bryant is still a very effective weapon in the red zone, and the proof is in the numbers.

For a player with 531 career receptions for 7,459 yards receiving and 73 touchdowns in eight seasons with the Cowboys, that scenario works in the Saints' favor. He openly flirted with the Patriots, though it's unclear if New England was crushing on him, too.

Bryant visited New Orleans on Monday, working out with fellow wideouts Brandon Marshall and Kamar Aiken. We may or may not sign a receiver. I think for any new guy coming in, especially a skill player, it's new verbiage.

But his production had been slipping in recent years as he battled foot and knee injuries; he had 69 catches for 838 yards and 6 touchdowns in 16 games played last year. While Michael Thomas's emergence as a legitimate top-five receiver in the league has been great for the Saints, the team must be equally disappointed by the lack of production from Cameron Meredith. Tre'Quan Smith, a third-round pick past year, has the second-most receiving yards for a wideout this season for the Saints at just 214 yards. Similarly, the team understood that a solid defense could key on Thomas in the postseason and leave them fighting with one hand. But they did the same thing when they traded for former New York Giants cornerback Eli Apple last month. What makes this move such a disadvantage for anyone playing New Orleans? The Saints are scheduled to play the Cowboys in AT&T Stadium in primetime on Thursday night, November 29th in a Week 13 matchup.
