French president target of planned attack, six arrested

It comes on the day that Mr Macron is touring the battlefields of northern France as he marks the centenary of the World War One Armistice.

The new force would also likely lack the support of one of Europe's most powerful militaries, as the United Kingdom has repeatedly come out against a joint European force that could create a parallel command structure to the already existing North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

"This is the Commission that put forward lots of initiatives and proposals to start building gradually a more meaningful and assertive defense identity in these hard geopolitical times", he told reporters at a regular briefing.

"We will not protect the Europeans if we do not decide to have a real european army".
