At least 12 people have been killed, including a police officer, at a country music bar in Thousand Oaks, California.

Authorities are investigating reports that the gunman used a smoke bomb but said they had not found anything to support this.

"We believe he shot himself", Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

Dean said Long was known to officers through a minor traffic collision and was a victim of a battery incident at a different bar.

Police cars are seen outside a country music bar and dance hall in Thousand Oaks, west of Los Angeles, after a gunman barged into a large, crowded venue and opened fire late November 7, 2018, killing at least 11 people, United States police said.

The bar's website says its hosts "College Country Night" every Wednesday.

"It's a horrific scene in there", Dean said. When they realized what was occurring, some patrons used barstools to break a window and escape, according to the Associated Press.

Deputies were called to Long's house in response to a disturbance in April, 2018 and "felt he might be suffering from PTSD", he said. "We just learned that our niece Alaina was one of the victims of last night's shooting at Borderline bar in Thousand Oaks".

In yet another odd coincidence, one of the victims to be named in the Vegas shooting was Susan Smith from Simi Valley which is only miles from the site of the Borderline shooting.

"You just don't expect it to happen in Thousand Oaks".

Matt Wennerstron, a 20 year old college student and regular at the bar, said the shooter fired a short-barreled pistol that apparently had a 10-15 round magazine. Dean says Helus was his longtime friend and gym partner and planned to retire soon after 29 years with the force. The injured included a deputy, Kuredjian said.

The officer who was killed in Thousand Oaks told his wife he loved her before running in to confront the gunman at the Borderline Bar and Grill Wednesday night.

By the time they entered the bar again the gunfire had stopped, and they found 12 people dead inside, including Helus and the gunman.

Video shot by a survivor shows the moments of terror as a gunman opened fire inside a crowded California bar.

"(He) said to her, 'Hey I got to go handle a call.

Cody Coffman had plans to join the Army, his father, Jason, told reporters Thursday. The highway patrolman cleared the perimeter and pulled Helus out, and waited as a SWAT team and scores more officers arrived.
