'Pokemon Go' creator Niantic's Harry Potter game will arrive in 2019

More than a year ago, Pokemon GO developer Niantic announced that it is working on Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

The free-to-play mobile game comes from Niantic and Warner Bros.

It was also noted that players could team up to combat powerful enemies, which sounds like a spin on Pokemon Go's gym mechanic. What we do know is that the game will be fully rooted in the magical universe of Harry Potter, although it isn't adapted from any of the existing books or films. Harry Potter fans may be well used to mysterious quests and adventures by now, considering how popular the mobile game Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery has been.

Quite a lacklustre trailer, but to hear that the game will be coming next year is a relief.

Video game stories from other sites on the web.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is scheduled to release in 2019 on Android and iOS devices.

"Please resist the urge to panic".

After visiting the website, it's made clear that these images are in reference to the "Calamity" - a phenomenon where "traces of magic" are "appearing across the Muggle world without warning and in a rather chaotic manner". "We worry it is only a matter of time before even the most incurious Muggles catch wind of it".

In the first teaser for the game, we see a wizard tossing up a poster asking for help, because the Wizarding World is at risk of exposure. "Brush up on your spells, get your wand ready, and enlist immediately".

However, the Wizards Unite website referenced at the end of the trailer reveals that players will be part of the 'Statute of Secrecy Task Force, ' "a new task force formed in partnership between the Ministry of Magic and the International Confederation of Wizards".
