Ten Years And $300 Million? Not Good Enough, Says Bryce Harper

Ten Years And $300 Million? Not Good Enough, Says Bryce Harper

"I'm comfortable with the alternative [to signing Harper]", Rizzo said. As Nightengale notes, the Nationals were thought to be able to retain Harper up until that report. Though that offer is no longer on the table, USA Today reported the team is still open to working out a different deal.

In order to afford Harper, the Yankees might have to explore the option of dealing Stanton, who has a no-trade clause.

"He's shown the type of player he is, and now he's a grizzled veteran, " Rizzo said.

Many in the industry believe star outfielder Bryce Harper's final destination for next season will come no sooner than the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas next month.

The top target on the free agent market turned down what would have been one of the most lucrative deals in Major League Baseball history.

Harper is expected to garner interest from a multitude of teams, and among them could be the Los Angeles Dodgers. He's looking to land something worth $400 million, which would be the richest baseball contract ever, by far.

Regardless of what the New York Yankees say during the early parts of this offseason, they will continuously be linked to free-agent megastar Bryce Harper. Even though Harper is still only 26, a 14-year deal with an average annual value of $30 million per season felt a bit excessive.

Harper is a six-time All-Star with 184 homers, 521 RBIs and a.900 on-base plus slugging percentage. Nightengale says that Harper is seeking a 13-year deal that tops the average annual value of $34.42 million that Zack Greinke now has in his deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

With Harper filling out the lineup, the Phillies have the potential to have a potent offense on paper. Though it feels unlikely that he'll have a better season than his 2015 National League MVP season - a season in which he hit.330 with 42 home runs and a staggering 9.3 fWAR - many of his best career years should still be in front of him.
