US Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigns at Donald Trump's request

He took credit for reversing a recent rise in violent crime and for taking a hardline stance on illegal immigration and gangs.

Mr Trump tweeted that Matthew G Whitaker, Mr Sessions' chief of staff, would become Acting Attorney-General. He had often been the subject of Trump's anger after recusing himself from the federal investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.

During a press conference at the White House Wednesday, President Trump said he is satisfied with the performance of "most of his Cabinet", but left room for major changes in the coming days and weeks.

Mr. Sessions had recused himself from that matter, causing much of the break with Mr. Trump. Sessions, once among the president's most loyal supporters, drew the president's scorn after his recusal from the Russian Federation investigation. "We've already heard rumors on the wind about Sessions' tenure, so suddenly we could have a President that understands that if I control the Department of Justice, I control this investigation".

"Most importantly as my time as attorney general, we have restored and upheld the rule of law", Mr Sessions added, while thanking the Republican president.

Schumer declined to answer a question about what he would want to see in an attorney general nominee, while raising suspicions about Trump's decision to oust Sessions.

Subsequently, it was announced that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein would no longer oversee the Mueller investigation.

From there, Trump began steadily hammering Sessions on Twitter.

Trump's first attorney general aggressively denied any involvement that day to collude with Russian officials to interfere in the 2016 president election on Trump's behalf.

Donny Deutsch and co-host Joe Scarborough were gleefully discussing that, within the next couple of months, the Mueller investigation would topple "one domino after another domino after another domino", when Mitchell burst their bubble.

Whitaker has been publicly critical of the Mueller investigation.
