Then Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hit theaters and was poorly received.

The success of the film, making it a Warner Bros opening day record, will come as little surprise to Warner Bros Pictures International who said that Aquaman's online profile was "extremely high" in China and has already scored incredibly high review ratings. It seems like a lot will ultimately hinge on how this is received and how well it performs at the box office. Of course, the critics slammed all of those films, besides Wonder Woman.

The crowded holiday season will see Jason Momoa's aquatic superhero compete against Spider-Man and Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, also out December 21, as well as Disney's Emily Blunt-led family-friendly musical Mary Poppins Returns, out December 19.

"Years ago, how could we have imagined that the most explosive DC movie would be Aquaman?" wrote one Weibo commenter.

Tracking estimates show that Aquaman is expected to make $65 million for its United States opening later this month, beating Mary Poppins Returns and the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, which open at the same time. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich has already kicked off talks for Aquaman 2, buoyed by the news that the film is expected to earn north of $65 million on its opening weekend later this month.

This report comes at a time when Warner still looking for more key pillars of its DC Extended Universe, as the future landscape of that megafranchise continues to take shape in the wake of Justice League.

A low seven-figure salary is still wonderful, since women in comic book movies usually earn somewhere in the six-digit range on their first outing (although technically, Heard had a very small role in Justice League).
