Cardinals strike gold, get Goldschmidt from Diamondbacks

The Cardinals are in talks to acquire the Arizona Diamondbacks slugger via trade, but the Houston Astros also are in the running for his services, USA TODAY's Bob Nightengale reported Wednesday. Goldschmidt, 31, has played all eight seasons of his major league career with the Diamondbacks, who selected him in the eighth round of the 2009 amateur draft.

Goldschmidt, 31, has been a National League All-Star each of the past six seasons and he's a four-time (2013, 2015, 2017, 2018) NL Silver Slugger award victor and three-time (2013, 2015, 2017) Rawlings Gold Glove award recipient.

Goldschmidt is slated to earn $14.5 next season, as well as a $1 million bonus for the trade.

Despite favorable reaction from the baseball world on both teams' hauls, Arizona fans weren't exactly pleased to see the star first baseman sent off to St. Louis. The right-handed batter has hit 30-plus homers in four of the last six seasons, including a league-leading 36 in 2013, when he finished second in MVP voting. After going 7-2 with a 3.88 ERA, Weaver followed that up with a record of 7-11 and an ERA of 4.95.
