Flu season hits MS; health officials provide recommendations

"That is why the flu shot is recommended for everyone over the age of 6 months, regardless of whether they are healthy or have risks". You don't catch the flu from getting the flu shot. "Flu vaccination can reduce doctor visits, pneumonia, missed work and school due to illness, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations".

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has declared December 2-8 as National Influenza Vaccination Week to remind people that it is not too late to get vaccinated.

CDC recommends that everyone six months and older who has not been vaccinated yet this season, get vaccinated now.

The symptoms of heart disease and the effects of flu amplify one another.

The Perry County Health Department is offering flu vaccines at no charge to the community during a special "FightFluTN" vaccination event today, December 5. National Influenza Vaccination week is a national awareness campaign focused on highlighting the importance of continuing flu vaccination through the holiday season and beyond. The cost without Medicare Part B is $65. This dose covers four common strains of the flu and studies have shown the vaccine to provide increased protection against the flu when compared to other regular adult flu vaccines. The nature and virulence of the virus also fluctuates each season, as does the effectiveness of that year's vaccine.

Because it is a preventative measure, the vaccine should be free under most health insurance plans. Clients are responsible for all charges incurred for services rendered.
