Funeral for former President George H.W. Bush

Funeral for former President George H.W. Bush

Retired U.S. Sen. Bob Dole was among those who paid their respects to former President George H.W. Bush Tuesday in Washington, D.C. A WWII combat veteran, Bush served as a member of Congress from Texas, ambassador to the United Nations, director of the Central Intelligence Agency, vice president and 41st president of the United States.

Mr Bush is lying in state at the Capitol until the Washington National Cathedral service.

Others dignitaries who attended on Tuesday included Vice President Mike Pence, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and House Speaker Paul Ryan, along with several Trump staffers.

The Episcopal service will include four eulogies, from Bush's son, the former president, former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, former Senator Alan Simpson and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Evan Meacham, who wrote a biography of Bush.

President Donald Trump, a fellow Republican, planned to visit with the mourning family at Blair House, near the White House. The late President Bush called Trump a "blowhard".

On Thursday, his body will be flown back to Texas to be buried near his wife Barbara Bush and his daughter Robin at the The George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum. Mrs. He was the last veteran to serve as president.

Flags on public buildings are flying at half-staff for 30 days.

Sully, Bush's service dog, also made an appearance.

Soon after he reached the height of his political popularity following the liberation of Kuwait, with public approval ratings that are the envy of today's politicians, the United States economy began to sour and voters began to believe that Mr Bush, never a great communicator - something even he acknowledged - was out of touch with ordinary people.

But the two men forged a working relationship. "Honestly I just liked him", he said. Bush, a Navy pilot, survived a bail-out from his stricken aircraft over the Pacific and an earlier crash landing.
