Hannah Gadsby among those floated to host the Oscars in 2019

"That call basically said, 'Kevin, apologize for your tweets [from 2009 and 2010], or we're gonna have to move on and find another host", he began.

Kevin addressed his previous homophobic comments and revealed that he would no longer be hosting the Academy Awards in February to avoid "distracting" from the real objective of the night.

On Thursday, Hart wrote on Instagram that critics should "stop being negative" after years-old tweets surfaced in which he used homophobic slurs.

As he stepped down from hosting the Oscars 2019, the Hollywood star said: 'I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year's Oscars... this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many incredible talented artists.

"I sincerely apologise to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past", wrote Hart.

Hosting the Academy Awards - known as the "most thankless job in town" - has become a challenge in the past couple years as the show faces declining ratings. "Guys, I'm almost 40 years old".

"I think it's embarrassing", Matthew Belloni, the editorial director of The Hollywood Reporter, said about the academy's decision to pick Hart. In an accompanying video, a shirtless Hart said he wasn't going to "let the craziness frustrate me". If you don't believe that people change, grow, evolve?

"I'm thankful and I'm appreciative of the opportunity [to host]", he said to the Academy at the end of the video.

Hart's attitudes about homosexuality were also a well-known part of his stand-up act.

Between Tuesday night and Thursday night, there was a public pushback over Hart's selection.

When Rolling Stone asked Hart about his anti-gay schtick in 2015, Hart said, "I wouldn't tell that joke today, because when I said it, the times weren't as sensitive as they are now". Much love & appreciation to the Academy.

Kevin Hart received a warm welcome this weekend in Australia, where he performed two comedy shows at a stadium, just after he stepped down as host of the 2019 Oscars following backlash over past anti-gay tweets.

The Academy Awards is yet to comment on Hart's departure.
