Philadelphia Phillies near deal for Seattle Mariners' Jean Segura

The Mariners' next trade after completing a very big seven-player swap with the New York Mets is another blockbuster with a National League East team.

A few days ago, there were talks heating up about the possibility of the Philadelphia Phillies acquiring Jean Segura from the Seattle Mariners. Source indicates Segura is expected to waive his no-trade clause and be dealt as early as Monday. Victor of the American League Final Vote past year, Segura hit a three-run, pinch-hit, go-ahead home run off Milwaukee Brewers reliever Josh Hader in the eighth inning of the All-Star Game at Nationals Park. He is under team control through 2023 and won't be arbitration-eligible until the 2021 season. He ranked sixth in the American League in hits (178) and seventh in batting average last season, while also leading the majors in three-hit games (20). He is owed $34.5 million over the remaining two years on his contract.

Carlos Santana was supposed to be an offseason win for Phillies general manager Matt Klentak. "He gets on base, he does damage at the plate and is quite an underrated first baseman".

Crawford, selected by the Phillies in the first round (16th overall) of the June 2013 draft, appeared in 72 games for the Phillies over the last two seasons and slashed.214/.333/.358 over 225 plate appearances. Pazos, who made $553,900 in 2018, is under team control through 2022 and will be arbitration eligible after the 2019 season. Segura is regarded as an above-average defender, meaning he should help the Phillies' porous defense.

Segura, 28, batted.304 with 10 home runs, 91 runs and 63 RBIs in 144 games last season and was named an American League All-Star.
