Revellers dies in nightclub stampede in Italy

At least six people, majority teenagers, were crushed to death in the early hours of Saturday (Dec 8) in a stampede at a nightclub where a concert was being held, officials said.

Italian media said the woman had gone with her daughter to the Lanterna Azzurra (Blue Lantern) disco in Corinaldo, near Ancona, where rapper Sfera Ebbasta, who is very popular with young teenagers, was set to perform.

Panicked revellers tried to flee a rap concert after someone sprayed pepper spray into the crowd.

RAI state radio said about 1,000 people were inside the disco when the stampede erupted.

Media reports say the suspected use of a pepper spray-like substance sparked the chaos at the venue in the town of Corinaldo, near Ancona in central Italy.

"I went out the main door. Sadly, six people died and dozens are injured", the fire service said in a Twitter statement.

Some of those with minor injuries were treated and released from a hospital, he said.

A 16-year-old boy told Ansa that fans were dancing while waiting for the start of the show when the stampede erupted.

Firefighters had concentrated on giving first aid to survivors, stretched out on the road outside the club, before starting their investigation, Poggiali said.

The ages of the victims weren't immediately given. It quoted one teenager as saying that the emergency exit was blocked.

Paramilitary police are investigating the cause, in addition to fire officials.
