Trump calls Rex Tillerson 'dumb as a rock' and 'lazy as hell'

"I think he grew exhausted of me being the guy every day that told him, 'You can't do that, and let's talk about what we can do, '" Tillerson explained.

Rex Tillerson, the former USA secretary of state, broke his silence Thursday calling his former boss, President Donald Trump, "undisciplined" and saying that he was given to violating the law. "And I can tell you who is going to win".

The comments marked the first time Tillerson has opened up about the discord that led to his dismissal, soon after he returned to the US from a diplomatic trip to Africa.

He did not say what actions Trump wanted to take that would have run afoul of the law.

Trump appeared glad to rid himself of Tillerson's incompetence, adding that he was "very proud" of his new Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Rex Tillerson has said the president is "undisciplined" and 'doesn't like to read.

Trump didn't hold back in his response, saying Tillerson "didn't have the mental capacity needed" to do the job. He was lazy as hell.

Mr Tillerson often said he woke up every morning worrying that a State Department employee would be harmed on his watch.

Tillerson, 66, was sacked from the White House in March after rumors of a rift between him and Trump had been circulating for some time.

Tillerson said on Thursday in Houston that Trump tried to get him to do illegal things without understanding they were illegal.

During a rare public appearance in Houston on Thursday, Mr Tillerson weighed in on his time in the administration.

While they often disagreed, Tillerson, who spent his whole career at "the disciplined, highly process-oriented" Exxon before retiring and becoming the top US diplomat, said he did not know how else to conduct himself with Trump except in "a really straightforward fashion".

Tillerson also said President Trump doesn't like to read. "Now it is a whole new ballgame, great spirit at State". He repeatedly refused to deny making the remark.

Mr Tillerson noted that he had never met Mr Trump before Vice-President Mike Pence invited Mr Tillerson to the White House. "It troubles me that the American people seem to want to know so little about issues, that they are satisfied with a 128 characters". "It's really a concern I have about us as Americans, and us as a society, and us as citizens".
