Bears Hire Former Colts Coach Chuck Pagano as New Defensive Coordinator

Pagano, 58, replaces Vic Fangio, who left Wednesday to become the Broncos head coach.

The Chicago Bears announced Friday evening they hired former Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano to be their new defensive coordinator.

"We are excited to add Chuck to our staff as defensive coordinator", Bears head coach Matt Nagy said in a statement on the team's website.

Pagano spent six seasons in Indianapolis as head coach, leading the Colts to a 53-43 regular-season record, two AFC South Championships, and three consecutive playoff appearances.

Fangio may be interested in bringing multiple staff members with him to his new gig, and Pagano could want to bring his own coaches in anyway. Pagano was the Ravens' defensive coordinator in 2011 and their secondary coach from 2008-10. Pagano came back after missing 12 weeks and led the Colts to a win over the Texans in their season finale to finish with an 11-5 record.

After taking a full season off from coaching, Pagano has already found himself back in the coaching sphere as a defensive coordinator.

Chicago's defense led the league with 36 takeaways and 27 interceptions under Fangio. The Bears' defense was also No. 3 in total yards allowed (299.7) and in sacks (50).
