CES 2019: Vive Cosmos is a brand new VR headset from HTC

The MLB, for example, has used the Vive Pro Eye for its Home Run Derby VR game.

HTC hasn't revealed a price or release date for the Vive Pro Eye, but says it will launch during the second quarter of 2019. How do you feel about the new Vive Pro Eye and Vive Infinity?

The Vive Cosmos on the other hand has inside-out tracking from four cameras and a flip-up display, requiring absolutely no external tracking. Foveated rendering uses eye tracking to increase the quality of the image where you're looking.

The last thing I was expecting to come out of this year's CES was another virtual reality headset, but here you go.

That's ranged from a belief that this brand could take on the iPhone with the HTC Desire (which it did) to charting new territory into virtual worlds with the Vive headset (which offered a possible, exciting view of the future rather than an incredible product we could buy right now). That means that no matter what direction your eyes are looking on the screen, you will always be seeing a sharp image instead of having to turn your head and keep your eyes locked forward. The accompanying bumpf doesn't really make things any clearer, but it sounds like a new interface and tutorial system that will presumably do a better job of easing people into VR than the Vive does now. In the meantime, I'm going to continue being rather excited about a VR headset that uses eye-tracking.

So when a picture of the new Cosmos headset being shown on stage with a smartphone nestled inside, but the brand is only saying "it'll be powered by a gaming PC, and also be powered by more than that", it's annoying. It's called Vive Cosmos.

The new headset builds integrated eye tracking into the Vive Pro, making foveated rendering a built-in experience rather than a pricey add-on.

The Vive Pro Eye wasn't the only new headset HTC showed off. HTC also teased an all-new headset called the Vive Cosmos.

Designed by HTC's Creative Labs, the Vive Reality System encompasses the total user experience from the moment a headset is put on to how content is interacted with. HTC did not disclose pricing for any of these new announcements.
