Director Luke Smith writes a note about Destiny's 'bright' independent future

One of the biggest news stories this year, and we aren't even at the end of January, was the split between Activision and Bungie.

In a blog post, Destiny franchise director Luke Smith thanked publisher Activision, as well as its High Moon and Vicarious Visions studios, for contributing to the Destiny IP. According to Smith, Bungie has learned from the release of Black Armory, noting specifically that the Power requirement for the first forge was too high, alienating players. "We want to find the line between new content that many players can play, and aspirational content for players to progress toward", Smith said of their current aim and direction of the game. This will involve improvements like "catch-up" mechanics to help returning players get up to speed and ready for new challenges. We're going to keep doing that.

Destiny director Luke Smith started out his most recent statement by paying tribute to their previous work with Activision - keeping things amicable in a professional sense, as it should be.

Activision and Bungie broke up recently, with Bungie getting the rights to Destiny and announcing it will self-publish the sci-fi series going forward. The original Destiny was particularly lamented for a lack of content at launch, with most people accusing Bungie of holding back content so that they could sell it to us as DLC later, while Destiny 2 was particularly criticised for its heavy implementation of microtransactions.

Fans are taking Smith's reference to future enemies to refer to Destiny's long, long-heralded arrival of the Darkness - those aliens in pyramid ships we've been waiting for the past six years (and not the dodgy rock band from Suffolk). The team is now "thinking about" its new status as being truly independent as well as self-publishing, taking the future of "Destiny" into account for its players.

I'd love to see Bungie tackle something new eventually, but, for now, continuing to focus on Destiny certainly makes sense. "Not everything has been lost in the dark corners of time" he wrote, referencing text found in the raid he had a hand in creating. "It was a busy Fall, and it is going to be a busy year".
