Guelph auto factory workers win $60-million lottery prize

Guelph auto factory workers win $60-million lottery prize

A group of coworkers at an Ontario automotive parts plant are the winners of a $60-million lottery jackpot.

The group said that they have all resigned from their jobs, joking that they shut down the production line.

The group all work the same shift at an auto parts manufacturer in Guelph, and chose to purchase the ticket together late a year ago.

Fernando Meneses was the first to find out about their big win, after Granadino heard on the radio that the winning ticket was sold in Guelph.

The group has only played together for the last two months, but they have very specific criteria for playing the lottery. Some members of the group had bought lottery tickets individually before but never got so lucky.

The win comes on the heels of another big win in the area.

"We're a very close line - closer than any of the other lines", said group leader Ala Hirmiz, in a release.

"How I look at the situation, this is the only chance we have to get money".

"I nearly didn't hand over my $5 when it was time to buy our ticket", group member, Mercedes Granadino said. "But I had this sixth sense, like some spirit sitting on my shoulder telling me to play!"

Initially Meneses thought they had only won $6,000, but scanned the ticket again and discovered that they had won the jackpot.

While some plan to buy new homes or take a family trip to Disneyland, one victor hopes to open an Ethiopian restaurant while another intends to explore Canada. They also want to spend some time relaxing.

"My phone was vibrating, "gagnant", $60 million, big victor, and still I couldn't believe", he said.

They have quit their jobs and some are looking to further their education or look to other opportunities.

Another victor, Tariku Birru has always dreamed of opening an Ethiopian restaurant, while Sampath Pathiraja Mudiyansel will be investing in a coconut plantation in his home country of Sri Lanka.
