Hurricanes acquire Niederreiter from Wild in exchange for Rask

Center Victor Rask was sent to Minnesota from Carolina in an exchange for Nino Niederreiter on Thursday.

Niederreiter, 26, has nine goals and 14 assists in 46 games this season. That campaign is his lone 20-goal season.

Niederreiter, 26, had become a consistent goal-scoring threat for the Wild since being acquired via trade in 2013 for Cal Clutterbuck and a third-round pick.

Rask has struggled a bit since then, tallying just 15 goals in his last 97 games over the past two seasons.

The Canes' Victor Rask (49), who underwent hand surgery September 13, 2018, will be counted on for a bounceback season in 2018-19.

Niederreiter signed a five-year contract with the Wild in July 2017 worth a total of $26.25 million, an average salary hit of $5.25 million.

But his production dipped in the injury-plagued season that followed. The accident required surgery, and he didn't make his season debut until November 21.

Rask was selected by Carolina in the second round of the 2011 draft. His older sister, Fanny, also wears 49 and was a member of Sweden's Olympic women's hockey team in 2014. He appeared in just 63 games after playing no fewer than 80 each of the previous four seasons and netted just 18 goals and 32 points - the latter a low for his time in Minnesota.
