Indiana Health Department: 4 flu deaths so far this season

Meanwhile, four people have died of the flu so far this season in IN, according to the state's department of health.

Influenza has sickened an estimated 6 million to 7 million Americans since October, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In the past couple of weeks, flu activity across IN has gone from moderate and regional to high and widespread. The program is called ARGONet, and it was tested on three years of flu seasons that began with September 2014 and ended in May 2017.

However, the Boston Children's Hospital's Computational Health Informatics Program (CHIP) has found a way to estimate the flu activity by using machine learning and forecasting methods together.

While the number of cases has decreased this week, those that were reported are spread out across a wider area.

Flu can cause severe illness and even death. While the CDC continuously monitors patient visits for flu-like illness in the USA, this information can lag up to two weeks behind real time. "It also would very likely be a much more effective vaccine than the ones we have to make each year, hoping that we guess accurately as to what the influenza virus that season will be".

Dr. Givelichian said another six children in the province have been treated for influenza in intensive-care units. "Three of those women who were not vaccinated nearly died and we had to get them over the hump by giving them Intensive Care Unit treatment." . If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities.

"Elderly, children under the age of five years, pregnant women and those with underlying health conditions are prone to develop serious complications from flu", he added.

"Getting the flu vaccine early in pregnancy is one of the most important things you can do for yourself as an expecting mom", he said.

Flu season numbers generally peak between December and February.

"Simple precautions would help prevent the spread of flu", said DAK President and flu expert Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan.
