Republicans quoted in local news reports were quick to complain about the apparent hypocrisy, and a Democrat agreed that the oversight did not look good.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) - who is also a black Methodist pastor - issued some valid advice to the congresswoman in a recent comment to Politico, which was published Friday.

Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest woman to serve in Congress, is considered a rising star in the Democratic Party and a champion of workers' rights.

"I'm sure Ms. Cortez means well, but there's nearly an outstanding rule: Don't attack your own people", Representative Emmanuel Cleaver (D., Mo.) told Politico.

They point to her hiring of two former organizers from the progressive group Justice Democrats, which helped get her elected, and a November conference call in which she urged, "all Americans know money in politics is a huge problem, but unfortunately the way that we fix it is by demanding that our incumbents give it up or by running fierce campaigns ourselves".

"She's new here, feeling her way around", Rep. Kurt Schrader (D., Ore.) said. "She doesn't understand how the place works yet".

Democratic leaders are mostly upset that the Bronx native railed against their new House rules on Twitter during the first week of the new Congress.

And her almost 3 million Twitter followers add to her clout.

"There's a difference between being an activist and a lawmaker in Congress", the source said.

On Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted an article about former Democratic Sen.

"With all respect, I certainly hope she's not the future, and I don't believe she is", Lieberman said on a Fox show hosted by Neil Cavuto. Instead she shot back, tweeting, "New party, who dis?"
