Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke teacher suspended over race controversy

Some black parents whose children have been refused admission to Laerskool Marble Hall say only black children have been placed on the waiting list.

Spokesperson for the NFP Sabelo Sigudu said: 'These private schools tendencies of segregating learners based on the colour of skin is against the principles of the democratic South Africa we live in today'.

TimesLIVE reported a mother, who chose to remain anonymous to protect the identity of her child, was fuming after an image was shared on Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke's WhatsApp group.

Provincial task team co-ordinator Keneetswe Mosenogi said the ANC was appalled by the seemingly racist seating arrangement at the school in a picture that is circulating in social media.

"We want the principal of the school to account". Language policy has historically been used to exclude black learners.

People then pointed out that the children were sitting separately according to race - the white children at a table in the centre of the room, and the few black children at a table in the corner.

Earlier, parents removed their children from the school and tensions were high as EFF members gathered outside the school. According to eNCA, the parents of the white children were the ones who took their kids out of the school on Thursday morning.

She said no one said a thing about the separation of the grade R class, so, she spoke to another parent outside of the WhatsApp group.

The images caused a stir on social media with political parties weighing in on the matter.

'You can take your kids to the whitest schools in the country but so long as the black majority is poor, your kids will always be reminded that they are black and therefore inferior'.

A meeting between the education department, the school and the community was still ongoing at 12:00 on Thursday.

"We are still very busy", he said.

This time of year is supposed to be joyous as a lot of kids start their school careers while others return to a higher grade.
