Report Trump counselled Cohen to lie to Congress rekindles impeachment cries

There have been a few stories that have attracted a lot of attention, but the overarching claims have gotten little to no corroboration or confirmation from other news organizations. That project never came to pass, but Cohen pleaded guilty past year to lying to Congress about the matter.

Democrats have been eager to publicly question Trump's current and former associates in a bid to shed light on the president and the organizations he's run, part of a concerted campaign to exercise the kind of vigorous oversight they say was lacking during the Republican-controlled first two years of Trump's presidency.

Inside the Justice Department, the statement was viewed as a huge step, and one that would have been taken only if the special counsel's office viewed the story as nearly entirely incorrect. We stake our credibility on it.' Special Counsel: "'Turns out Buzzfeed has no credibility'".

Gauger is now chief information officer at Liberty University, where Trump supporter Jerry Falwell president.

The clamor grew throughout the day and into Friday night. Trump tweeted. "A very sad day for journalism, but a great day for our Country!"

Giuliani decided thank Mueller for "correcting the BuzzFeed false story".

One federal crime to which Cohen pleaded guilty was lying to Congress about Trump's business negotiations with powerful Russians over a potential Trump Tower real estate project in Moscow.

He said there was "quite a bit of documentary evidence of this, whether those are emails, internal correspondence and witness interviews that they gathered before they spoke with Mr. Cohen at the special counsel".

Mueller's denial, according to people familiar with the matter, aims to make clear that none of those statements in the story are accurate.

A Senate Democrat, Chris Murphy of CT, tweeted that "we need to know this ASAP" if Mueller does have multiple sources confirming that Trump directed Cohen to lie to Congress.

The report said Cohen then acknowledged Trump's instructions when he was interviewed by the Mueller team. But those documents did not indicate that Trump played a direct role in his false testimony.

On Twitter, Trump charged that Cohen is "Lying to reduce his jail time!" even though Cohen has already been sentenced.

The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

At issue is a report by BuzzFeed News that Trump told Cohen to lie about negotiations over the Moscow project that extended into the 2016 campaign. Mueller, despite the high-profile position he accepted in the spring of 2017 and the political stakes of his investigation into whether any Americans collaborated with Russia's attack on the 2016 presidential election, is famously silent.

While Mr Carr did not directly address whether there was evidence that Mr Trump directed Mr Cohen to lie to Congress, he disputed portions of the story about how BuzzFeed corroborated the explosive allegations against Mr Trump.

Though Congress could use the allegation as a basis for impeachment proceedings, Justice Department legal opinions do not allow for criminal charges against a sitting president.

But following the story's publication late Thursday night, Democratic members of Congress began pointing to the report as grounds for the President's impeachment.

House intelligence committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., both said they would probe BuzzFeed's account.
