Teen in Air NZ bomb drama still in custody

An Auckland Airport spokesperson originally told Newshub the plane was mid-flight and had to make an emergency landing due to the incident.

A 19-year-old man has been charged following an incident at Auckland International Airport on Wednesday night which caused disruptions to passengers. He will face Manukau District Court on Thursday.

When airline staff announced there had been a security breach, he knew "immediately" that it was because of his comment.

His lawyer, Jane Northwood, said she had never seen anyone "more distressed or remorseful and overwhelmed' and she had arranged for immediate sentencing because of concerns for his safety in jail".

Fifita was arrested by police and remanded in Mt Eden prison.

Fifita was arrested on Wednesday night and a court on Thursday heard he wrote the message because he considered it amusing, Stuff.co.nz reported.

The total cost of Fifita's actions are estimated to be tens of thousands of dollars.

New Zealand website Stuff.co.nz reported that the teen, Meke Fifita, faced imprisonment or a fine but was deported after his father paid a $NZ3000 repatriation sum.
