Tim Tebow Will Try Out for Mets in Spring Training, Again

The New York Mets announced Thursday they've invited the former National Football League quarterback to attend their spring training camp. Alonso tore up the minor leagues last season, slugging 36 home runs between AA Binghamton and AAA Las Vegas, but was passed over for a September call up due to defensive concerns. Van Wagenen also hinted that Tebow could play his way onto the Mets, but the Mets' depth in the outfield makes it unlikely barring a rash of injuries.

As the Big Lead notes, "Tebow took a big step forward past year, hitting.273 with six homers and 36 RBIs for the New York Mets' AA affiliate in Binghamton".

Tim Tebow has become quite the spring training veteran for the Mets.

The 31-year-old since has recovered from surgery and is ready to resume pursuing his major league dreams. Tebow racked up 103 whiffs in his 298 plate appearances, which resulted in a 34.5 percent strikeout rate.

A season earlier, he was in minor league camp but appeared in Grapefruit League games for the team.

He is among 13 non-roster invitees who will participate in the camp, which starts on February 16. Last month, Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen - who once served as Tebow's agent - said Tebow was one step away from being big league player. Folks, we are closer to Tebow playing in Major League Baseball than ever before.

"If Tim Tebow is the best offensive player in Triple-A at that point, he's going to be in Mickey's lineup", Van Wagenen said referring to Mets manager Mickey Callaway.
