Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen to testify before Congress in February

Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen to testify before Congress in February

"We have no interest in inappropriately interfering with any ongoing criminal investigations, and to that end, we are in the process of consulting with Special Counsel Mueller's office", Cummings said in a statement.

Like it or not, Cohen will be airing the administration's dirty laundry under oath in front of a government committee in February, something which is likely to cost traders, economists, and of course, President Trump himself, a few nights' sleep at the very least. Most relevant are the details concerning the hush payments to two women who claim to have had sexual affairs with Trump and information on the Trump campaign's dealings with Russian Federation.

Cummings said that Oversight Committee, which is also slated to take on increases in prescription drug prices later this month, would announce more information about the hearing in the coming weeks.

Special Counsel spokesman Peter Carr declined to comment on Cohen's upcoming testimony before Congress, but Cummings told reporters outside an unrelated closed briefing on Thursday that his committee's questioning of Cohen will be limited to avoid publicly discussing sensitive portions of the Mueller probe.

The announcement of Cohen's testimony is the latest sign that House Democrats plan to make oversight of every aspect of Trump's life a key part of their control of the House.

Asked by reporters in Texas on Thursday about Cohen's appearance, Trump said he's "not anxious about it at all".

The president has denied the affairs but has deployed shifting explanations about when he learned about the payments to the women.

Cohen has pleaded guilty in both investigations and was sentenced last month to three years in prison.

On the issue of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, Giuliani says, "Cohen doesn't know a damn thing about collusion".

Cummings has sent document requests to the White House and the Trump Organization that seek to determine why Trump, who reimbursed Cohen for the hush-money payments, omitted that debt on his public financial disclosure form.

Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and Trump's television defense lawyer, lashed out against Michael Cohen.

In a statement, Cohen said he made the decision to testify voluntarily before Congress in furtherance of his effort to "commitment to cooperate and provide the American people with answers".

Cohen's 2017 congressional testimony before the Senate intelligence and House intelligence committees led to a guilty plea in November 2018 for lying under oath about Trump's business dealings in Russian Federation.

After Cohen was sentenced, Lanny Davis, an attorney who has been advising him on his media strategy, said Cohen wanted to speak publicly about Trump.

"Mr Cohen has expressed an interest in telling his personal story in open session, and we welcome his testimony before the Committee on Oversight and Reform", he said.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller for many months has been investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 USA presidential election, possible collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign and potential obstruction of justice.
