The biggest casualties of the same have been opening batsman Aaron Finch, middle-order batsman Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh.

Patterson, yet to play for Sydney Thunder this season, was part of last year's Australia A tour and scored an unbeaten century at Perth's new stadium in the first half of the Shield season.

Australia squad: Marcus Harris, Joe Burns, Matthew Renshaw, Usman Khawaja, Travis Head, Will Pucovksi, Marnus Labuschagne, Tim Paine (captain), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Peter Siddle. "We look forward to him joining the squad".

Australia just went through a four-Test series at home without a centurion for the first time in history but the major reason for the floated shake-up is likely to be the fact the Sheffield Shield is now on hold for the BBL.

Pucovski, 20, has played just eight first-class matches and opted to take a break from the game late past year to receive treatment for a mental health-related illness, shortly after scoring 243 for Victoria against Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield. The left-hander has only managed 199 runs at 19.9 in Sheffield Shield so far but had a superb County season with Somerset past year. In 11 Tests, Renshaw has three fifties and one century but his batting against spinners has garnered a lot of positive attention, evident from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2017, and his can be a handy inclusion considering the impact of spinners in the Sri Lankan line-up.

After making plentiful changes to their ODI squad for the imminent ODI series against India, the Australian selectors put on display a mini-replica of the same while selecting the 13-member squad for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.

"Joe Burns has had strong performances in first-class cricket this season, and we believe he can contribute strongly if given the chance in the series", added Horns. He also performed extremely well in England during the County season.

Batsman Shaun Marsh has been dropped after scoring just one fifty in four matches against India as the tourists won a Test series in Australia for the first time.

"There is no doubt the India series produced some disappointing results and we have now reviewed the squad ahead of the series against Sri Lanka", chief selector Trevor Hohns said.
