Aussie UFC champ Robert Whittaker pulls out on day of title defence

Kelvin Gastelum, with a title belt draped over his shoulder, called himself "the champ" when speaking with media at UFC 234 on Sunday in Melbourne, Australia.

The judges have scored the three-round middleweight fight 29-28, 30-27, 30-27 in favour of the man known as "The Last Style Bender".

Heading into the fight, Adesanya was an overwhelming favorite but he found out quickly in the opening round that the 43-year old Silva still had some fight left in him.

Israel Adesanya punches Anderson Silva.

Adesanya is now undefeated in five UFC fights and 16 MMA bouts.

The highly anticipated No. 1 contender match between rising New Zealand star Israel Adesanya (15-0) and Brazilian veteran Anderson Silva (34-8) will now serve as the main event on the Rod Laver Arena card. "This is it for me", Adesanya said after the fight - after which he and Anderson Silva bowed down simultaneously in a showing of mutual respect - the younger pupil having rightfully earned his idol's respect.

The respect Adesanya had for Silva was evident from the moment the fight began.

"He had abdominal pain and was finally taken to the hospital by the UFC at 1am and was trying everything to remain in the fight, refusing any treatment that would force him out of the fight", Prates said. Adesanya sidestepped the blow, however, and went back to work. Adesanya had the faster hands and was consistently getting home, though he wasn't punching in combination.

Adesanya was obviously referencing middleweight champion Robert Whittaker, who pulled out of the UFC 234 main event just hours before the card was slated to start after he was forced into emergency surgery for a hernia.

Former double UFC champion Conor McGregor seems to be gearing up to fight anyone and everyone at this point.

"Hopefully Rob heals up great". However, due to Whittaker's injury, Kelvin Gastelum could still be next in line for a title shot.

"He's going to be better in four-to-six weeks", White said.

Meanwhile, Silva embraced the crowd following his hard fought loss and stated once again that he's not going anywhere except back to the gym to prepare for his next fight.

"I love my job. I continue to fight because this is my heart".
