British pop star Dua Lipa wins Grammy for Best New Artist

Lipa, 23, took home two awards on Sunday, the first for "Best New Artist" for her 2017 single "New Rules" and the second for her single "Electricity" which won 'Best Dance Recording'.

Dua was overwhelmed with emotion while waiting backstage as the victor was announced following her performance with St. Vincent.

Dua Lipa won two GRAMMYs at this year's event. The remark was a clear reference to outgoing Recording Academy president Neil Portnow and his comments after the 2018 Grammys that women needed to "step up" in order to receive recognition in the future.

'I want to say a really big thank you to my fans who've allowed me to be the best version of myself'.

"And I'm proof that you can do whatever you put your mind to".

"I guess this year we've really stepped up", Lipa said, followed by a roar of applause from the crowd.

Even though Ariana Grande didn't end up attending the 2019 Grammy awards, she still found a way to make use of the incredible Zac Posen gown that was designed in her honour.

Following the translated dig by Lipa, Portnow took the Grammy stage later in the night to address diversity, inclusion and what the future holds as his tenure comes to a close. This has been changed to "Kosovo-British musician".
