Coke launches new flavor

Customers can expect to see new packaging for the Cherry and Vanilla flavors, too, for a "bit of a facelift".

The soda company announced the first new Coke flavor in more than a decade: Orange Vanilla Coke and Orange Vanilla Coke Zero Sugar.

Coke considered other worldwide flavor options such as raspberry, lemon, and ginger, but eventually landed on Orange Vanilla.

While Orange Vanilla Coke was available for a limited time in Canada last summer, this month's release represents the first new Coke flavor to be introduced in the U.S. in more than ten years.

The company says the goal is to bring back summer memories.

Before settling on Orange Vanilla, Coke considered raspberry, lemon, and ginger flavored versions of the drink.

Coca-Cola began testing new Coke flavors a couple years ago after the successful relaunch of Coke Zero Sugar. Orange Vanilla, it said, was the clear favorite.

Focus groups also tried flavors from Coke's worldwide market, including raspberry, lemon and ginger, which CNN reported are popular in Asia, but Orange Vanilla, available for a limited time in Canada, was the favorite.

There is, of course, a danger in any change to the classic Coca-Cola formula. It quickly reversed course. The Orange Vanilla Coke Zero doesn't smell or taste as orange-heavy.

A line extension gives a product more space on retail shelves.
